Hormonal Birth Control Methods

Oral Contraceptives (The Pill)
A widely used method containing synthetic hormones to prevent ovulation, available as the combination pill (estrogen + progestin) or mini-pill (progestin only). With proper use, effectiveness is up to 99%.

Injections
Given every three months, injections deliver progestin to stop ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. An excellent option for women who prefer not to take a daily pill.

Patches
Applied weekly to the skin, hormone patches deliver estrogen and progestin continuously, offering the same effectiveness as oral contraceptives without daily maintenance.

Vaginal Rings
Placed inside the vagina for three weeks, rings release low doses of estrogen and progestin, followed by one week without for menstruation.

Implants
A small device inserted under the skin of the upper arm that releases progestin for up to three years. Provides quick return of fertility after removal.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Birth Control

When discussing your options, we’ll cover:

  • Effectiveness at preventing pregnancy
  • Ease of use
  • Existing health conditions (including PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, or other gynecologic concerns)
  • Potential for STD prevention
  • Long-term impact on your reproductive health

Non-Hormonal & Permanent Options

IUD (Intrauterine Device)
A T-shaped device placed in the uterus to prevent fertilization and implantation. Options include hormonal and copper IUDs, both offering long-term pregnancy prevention.

Sterilization (Tubal Ligation)
A permanent surgical procedure for women who no longer wish to become pregnant. Performed laparoscopically, the fallopian tubes are sealed or blocked to prevent egg travel.
